Flower Vase Gan

“Iwao” means a large, rugged rock—weathered, chipped, and shaped by wind and rain over time. Its worn surface speaks to the enduring harshness of nature.

This vase, named “Iwao”, is inspired by the image of a resilient flower growing firmly rooted in such a massive rock, quietly yet powerfully enduring the natural elements.

The deep black color is achieved using a traditional “Tetsu-yū” (iron glaze) technique, in which iron oxide in the glaze produces a rich, subdued black through a chemical reaction during firing.
This glazing method is a hallmark of Seto ware, one of Japan’s most historic ceramic traditions.

The vase’s rough texture and calm, matte black finish evoke the quiet strength and grounded presence of the rock itself.
