Flower Vase Gan
Flower Vase Gan
The word "巌 gan" refers to a large, rugged rock.
The way such a massive rock is weathered and eroded by the elements, its surface chipped and worn, seems to speak of nature's harshness. The "Gan" vase evokes the image of a flower tenaciously living, its roots firmly embedded in such a rock.
The black color of the vase is achieved through a technique called "Tetsugusuri" (iron black glaze). This method utilizes iron oxide in the glaze to create a color reaction, and it's one of the representative glazing techniques of Seto ware. The rough texture of the surface and the calm, quiet black color create the atmosphere of "Gan."
