The name "Pestle" comes from the French word for a mortar pestle, inspired by its shape. With its slender design, it enhances aromas and is perfect for cold sake, green tea, beer, and other beverages. Originally, this cup was created upon request from a restaurant in New York for serving Japanese sake and is also used in a Japanese tea specialty shop in Paris. Additionally, it can be used for a sip of beer or as a single-flower vase. The base material is shaped using a method called "Mizu-Kote" (water trowel), where ceramic clay is placed into a plaster mold, rotated, and smoothed with water and a trowel. This technique is particularly suitable for shaping circular items such as rice bowls, teacups, cups, and plates, requiring the skilled craftsmanship of artisans. After shaping, the piece is dried and trimmed to refine its form. In porcelain production, the final trimming process is crucial for defining the shape and requires experienced craftsmanship. The shaped piece is then bisque-fired for two days at 920°C, and an original glaze is brushed on each piece individually before being reduction-fired for three days at 1300°C. Finally, platinum is applied as overglaze decoration and fired at 800°C, completing the piece.
