Color: Yoi

In the past, refined drinkers didn’t simply gaze at the moon during tsukimi-zake (moon-viewing with sake); instead, they found beauty in the moon’s reflection in their sake cup. Inspired by this poetic tradition, we created a new sake cup that captures the image of the “upside-down moon” reflected in lacquerware.

The cup comes in six unique designs—Yoi, Jūgo, Kasa, Ariake, Misoka, and Sen—each expressing a different phase or mood of the moon through lacquer and makie (gold or silver powder decoration).

Its bold, cylindrical form is unlike any traditional sake cup, offering a fresh and striking impression. Made of wood, it is lightweight, easy to hold, and gentle against the lips. It also stays cool to the touch, even with hot sake, while retaining warmth—making it both beautiful and functional.

Slightly larger than typical sake cups, it was designed with Chinese tea cup dimensions in mind, making it an excellent gift for international visitors as well.

Perfect as a birthday present or for occasions like Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, or Respect-for-the-Aged Day—especially for those who love sake and appreciate thoughtful craftsmanship.

The design is by Kazushige Miyake (miyake design), who is also known for his work with MUJI.
