In Japan, the act of cleansing oneself of sin, impurity, and misfortune through prayer to the gods is called “祓" (harau) (to purify).
Japanese belief embraces the existence of eight million deities (Yaoyorozu no Kami), among which the sun deity holds a particularly high status.
This piece expresses the purifying power of the sun deity using soft, diluted ink tones.

Meet the Maker: Ryugen

Ryugen's journey began at 26 after a period of deep self-reflection sparked by depression. One day, the answer became clear—writing characters. Encouraged by a spiritual counselor’s insight into a past life spent with a brush, he pursued calligraphy, starting formal training at 29 and becoming a full-time calligrapher at 34. His work centers on awakening consciousness through art.
